American Society Of Health-System Pharmacists Releases Vision For Pharmacy Work Force In Hospitals And Health Systems
21-Jun-2007: The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists has released a land-mark vision document for the future of the pharmacy work force in hospitals and health systems. Published today in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, the "ASHP Long-Range Vision for the Pharmacy Work Force in Hospitals and Health Systems" examines the many professional demands and issues pharmacists will face in the future.
The vision explores how the profession will deal with a variety of critical professional and practice issues in the future, including:
-- Credentialing,
-- Residency training,
-- Teamwork within the pharmacy function and the entire patient care process,
-- Role and credentials of pharmacy technicians,
-- Experiential learning requirements,
-- Expanded and specialized areas of pharmacy practice, and
-- Role of automation and technology.
The vision foresees a future in which residency training and continuous professional development will be essential requirements for pharmacists practicing in hospitals and health systems. The document also predicts that additional credentials will evolve to demonstrate competence in specialty practice areas, such as emergency department care, informatics, and clinical research.
"This vision can help pharmacy departments in their strategic planning to help make sure they have work-force models in place to meet the future head on," said Cynthia Brennan, Pharm.D., M.H.A, ASHP president. "Every pharmacy department in the country should use this document to help make sure they are planning appropriately for the future so that they will be best positioned to provide the highest level of care to their patients."
ASHP is committed to leading the profession in achieving this vision. The Society will be talking with organizations representing pharmacy, nursing, medicine, and medical specialties. The ASHP Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership will also play a key role in the implementation of the vision in its work to develop new leaders for the future. In addition, ASHP is launching a work force resource center on its Web site offering tools and information to help pharmacists in hospitals and health systems best meet these future work force challenges.
The "ASHP Long-Range Vision for the Pharmacy Work Force in Hospitals and Health Systems" was developed by the ASHP Council on Education and Work Force Development and approved by the ASHP Board of Directors in April of this year. The document can be found online here. Enter "ashppr" when prompted for a username and password.
For more than 60 years, ASHP has helped pharmacists who practice in hospitals and health systems improve medication use and enhance patient safety. The Society's 30,000 members include pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in inpatient, outpatient, home-care, and long-term-care settings, as well as pharmacy students.
